"The last decadent painter" is the status deserved by symbolist, portraitist and religious artist Antoon van Welie (1866-1956). Having made his mark with his symbolic work, van Welie developed into an internationally renowned society portraitist. Divas and dandys, nobility and statesmen posed for him. From Pope Benedict XV and Prince Hendrik to actress Sarah Bernardt and dancer Isadora Duncan. The flamboyant painter was the portraitist of the international beau monde. Art critics, out of sobriety and innovation, struggled with Van Welie's style and flamboyant life. His great international fame notwithstanding van Welie never received the attention his artistic merit deserves.
