Ashlyn (Over Time), 2016

Erica Elan Ciganek

From the Solo Exhibition "Sitting With" at Treason Gallery in Seattle, WA in September of 2016. “Sitting With” pulls together a group of women whose individual visual presence is one of being powerfully alone. The symmetry of the space leads one to find themselves in both the intimacy of the portraits, and the vastness of a communal landscape. In a society that garners power through dehumanization, engaging images of people are often denied a pure encounter. We all see through lenses that are skewed in some way. In the words of author Annie Dillard “...I see only tatters of clearness through a pervading obscurity.” Our visual and relational spheres exist within structures of obscuring others. This process of seeing both in the creation of the pieces, as well as observing the outcome, is done in hopeful, clumsy defiance of a culture of rampant dehumanization.
