Artwork Title: Cottage Flower Garden

Cottage Flower Garden

Jane Peterson

Landscape painting of cottage and flower garden, attributed to Jane Peterson. This work is unsigned but was purchased at the public auction of the Estate of Jane Peterson Philipp, held by O. Rundle Gilbert Auctioneers, on Aug. 9 & 10, 1966, in Ipswich, Massachusetts.... In 1925, she married M. Bernard Philipp and took up a summer residence at his 'Rocky Hill' estate in Ipswich, MA, returning to New York City for the winter months. It was at this time that she developed her love for painting the flowers that she cultivated at Rocky Hill. She became one of the 'Ipswich Painters', a close-knit group of 9 artists, all of whom lived in Ipswich, who were inspired by nature in the surrounding countryside and by the "ancient" houses and old bridges in the town. It seems likely that our painting is of such a home and garden in the town of Ipswich.
