Artwork Title: Zinnias
In Peterson’s striking still life arrangement Zinnias, the vivid orange, red and yellow blossoms radiate with an inner glow as they emerge from their dark surroundings, and these colors are cleverly echoed in the distinctive vase and reddish table cloth. The various notations on the stretcher bars may suggest Zinnias was displayed with several organizations during her lifetime, such as the Rockport Art Association, the Copley Society, the American Artists Professional League and the Audubon Artists. Just as with her harbor scenes, Peterson’s still lifes were critically well-received, earning praise for their daring use of color and keen sense of design.
