Artwork Title: William Butler Yeats

William Butler Yeats, 1908

John Singer Sargent

This charcoal portrait of the Irish poet was commissioned for the frontispiece of his first volume of Collected Poems, published the same year. Yeats apparently wore the elaborate bow tie in an effort, according to art dealer and Sargent contemporary Martin Birnbaum, “to remind himself of his own importance as an artist!” (https://www.vogue.com/article/john-singer-sargent)
