Artwork Title: Entangled Labyrinths and Minimal Surfaces

Entangled Labyrinths and Minimal Surfaces, 2014-2015

Julie Brooke

"These new paintings were made as part of my residency in the ANU Dept. of Applied Mathematics.... I'm exploring the idea of 'cubic membranes' (also known as 'entangled labyrinths'), which are 3-dimensional structures formed from 2-dimensional hyperbolic surfaces. These soft crystalline structures can be found in nature. For example, they appear to provide a template for the construction of the butterfly wing during metamorphosis." http://www.juliebrooke.net/entangled-labyrinthsstatement
