Artwork Title: Pile of Paintings

Pile of Paintings, 2014

Margie Livingston

The piece riffs on Caspar David Friedrich’s “Wreck of the Hope.” A tragic but beautiful painting depicting a shipwreck in the north sea. Sometimes called “The Polar Sea” or “Sea of Ice.” It also brings to mind Guston’s representations of paintings turned to the wall. It can be seen as Livingston's response to the spread of devastation across the globe. She is beginning to think of white as a kind of reset button for color, similar to how the Zero movement used white in the late 50’s and early 60’s.
