Sweetgrass Saints are Gullah ancestors who lived and worked in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Robert Smalls was born enslaved in Beaufort, SC, but he gained his freedom when he commandeered a Confederate ship and escaped. After the war he became a land owner, a general and a SC State Representative. The original is acrylic on 8" x 10" canvas, and is framed in a gold wooden frame.
