The newest expression in Smith III’s continuing dialogue with color theory, optics, scale, and technology is “Bent Parallel,” created expressly for Untitled in Miami. A monumental hinge-like wall of mirror meshes surfaces by creating a perceptual plane, while shifting and blending colored light. Smith III explains, “Planes stretch beyond your periphery are slightly bent in relation to each other. The environment and the viewers themselves become tinted with tone as a third, material-less plane of colored reflection creates the illusion of space beyond.” Spaces become simultaneously infinite and finite, while hues push and pull, saturating and dissolving the surroundings, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction of pure color.
