Artwork Title: Portrait of Erasmus at his Writing Table

Portrait of Erasmus at his Writing Table, 18th century

Unknown

...in all probability a copy from the 18th c. The copyist took works by Albrecht Dürer and Hans Holbein the Younger as examples ... The room where the philosopher is seated can be compared to interiors that Dürer depicted, for example in his 'Hieronymus in his study'. A contemporary portrait of Erasmus was made by Hans Holbein the Younger. His features were undoubtedly used by the unknown artist as model for the face of the humanist. http://collectie.boijmans.nl/en//collection/1309-%28ok-lbr%29
