Artwork Title: Kittens' Tea & Croquet Party

Kittens' Tea & Croquet Party, 1870

Walter Potter

37 kittens having tea or playing croquet. As with all of Potter's tableaux, the details and attitudes are brilliant. Tea leaves in cupsm mouse tartsm jewelery and activity inside the house shows the obvious attention Potter gave this piece. Most of the kittens came from Wards Farm at Henfield. Farm cats were allowed to run wild to keep down rodent populations. Usually only one kitten per litter was kept and the others put down to avoid feline over-population.
