Artwork Title: Hôtel Turgot, Hollandse Kamer

Hôtel Turgot, Hollandse Kamer, 2005

Wendelien Schönfeld

The 18-century Hôtel Turgot in Paris houses the collection (drawings and prints by Rembrandt, Goltzius, correspondence Mondrian, etc. etc.) of art collector Frits Lugt (1884-1970). Wendelien Schönfeld was asked to do a series of color wood cuts of the hotel. In these wood cuts, it is the light that draws your attention. On an almost blinding, just-polished parquet floor. Or between twilight tones in the library. Light falls in this palace as an intruder. Each picture contains several types of light: direct outside light, different kinds of lamp light (A chandelier), skylights ... Wendelien writes that she had only 4.5 days in Paris to make sketches. She had to capture everything. She threw herself into the task almost maniacally. Because, she says, when you work from sketches you "run the risk that the experience fades into the background and you are no longer experiencing the room, but merely redrawing."
