Artwork Title: Woman with Medallion

Woman with Medallion, 1940

Y. G. Srimati

Srimati’s painting career began in the early to mid-1940s, when she was still in her teens. A series of studies of women reveals an early facility with her chosen medium and a considerable skill at life study. This work is a remarkably mature work for a young artist, already displaying a sophisticated approach to composition. It draws on the work of a number of Srimati’s older peers, including Amrita Sher-Gil, with whom she shared an empathy for the life of the Indian rural masses.
