Artwork Title: Dawn
While Mt. Fuji is a challenging mountain top to climb, Yu Yamauchi not only scaled his way to the summit of the mountain, but also made the celebrated mountaintop his home for nearly two years. While doing so, Yamauchi recorded his incredible adventure with his camera. He shot a picture every day at dawn from the same location, amassing a collection of sunrise images while there. While that in itself is amazing, the even more incredible thing is if you look through his images, they are stunningly distinct and different from each other. Each one from the series is gorgeous as the hues and cloud formations in one are entirely different from the next image. He shot theses pictures over a duration of five months a year over a four-year period. The self-taught Yamauchi captured the incredible and ever-changing sunrises from the same location close to the summit of Mt. Fuji which is 10,000 feet above sea. Yamauchi camped out in a hut on the famous mountain regarded as one of the most sacred places in Japan for a total of 600 days. While living in the hut he would get up at the break of dawn to photograph the sunrise. Yamauchi refers to the images collectively as Dawn. Yamauchi wrote about the series saying, “This space, “above-the-clouds,” exists far from the ground where we live our daily lives. It is also a space between the earth and the universe. Being there simply reminds me of the face that we live on the earth which is a planet within an infinite space of the universe. Changing shapes with every second, the clouds look like a membrane of the earth. When the sun rises behind a cloud-forming horizon, the world pained in only blue before suddenly and completely looking different. I witnessed many times this magical transformation.” Not too many may see even one of these sunrises in person during their lifetime. Yamauchi is lucky to have experienced 600 of them.
