Artwork Title: Ginny and Elizabeth

Ginny and Elizabeth, 1976

Alice Neel

"At first glance the painting appears to show a modern-day Madonna and Child. The Madonna, wearing jeans, is sitting on a sun-dappled floor while the baby-–a girl, surely-–nestles between her mother’s protective legs. All seems calm and serene, until you notice the woman’s body language. Her shoulders are tense, her torso slumped, and she is staring not at her child but blankly at the floor. If this is what motherhood looks like then it is clearly not for the faint-hearted." [see Telegraph link]
