In the 1920s Hawksley evolved a flat schematic style that was distinctively personal, though strongly influenced by Japanese prints, with lesser debts owed to the early Italian masters for composition and to Cayley Robinson for tone. Her work has a singular rhythm, and an exceptional palette. Here, it is moonrise, and colors glow in the yellow light of the lanterns as the women hurry to dress against the chill. Hawksley has used bodycolor to thicken the hotter colors of flesh and cloth against the cooler washes of the sand, whilst the textured sky and rising moon seem to be done in tempera.
