Le beau soir1892 by Felix Edouard Vallotton

Symbolist art seeks to simply and intensify images, to make them profound and essentially “symbolic”. This haunting image of a dreamlike sunset uses the starkness of a woodcut engraving to create its abstracted effect. The work is clearly influenced by the Japanese prints that were hugely popular with the French avant-garde and it resembles the visionary art of Norwegian Symbolist Edvard Munch
