Franz Joseph Adolph Maria Melchers, known as Franz M. Melchers, (b. Münster, April 16, 1868; d. Antwerp, March 18, 1944); Dutch painter, draftsman and engraver of German origin who made a career in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Born in Münster in the province of Westphalia (Kingdom of Prussia), Melchers, on his mother's side, came from the family of Carel Pecqueur, who emigrated in the 1840s to Batavia (Dutch East Indies). According to art critic Cyriel Buysse, who calls him a "cosmopolitan artist," Franz Melchers left Prussia at 15, lived in Veere, in Zeeland, for 3 years. He then settled in Brussels, where he studied art, and then went to The Hague to complete his training; here Jan Toorop was his classmate and friend.

In the Belgian capital, perhaps as early as 1889, he met Octave Maus, who presented his first works in the framework of the Salon des XX ... and later in various events of La Libre Esthétique. Exhibited in the Belgium pavillion at the1889 World Fair (Paris). His work was marked by Japonism and the Dutch masters.

...close to Charles Doudelet, with whom he worked, before WWI, on stained glass projects, among others.

Married Jane Domartus, with whom he had a son, Harold.

Died in Antwerp, then occupied by the German army.
