Artwork Title: Daphnis and Chloé

Daphnis and Chloé, 1881

Gaston Renault

"Believing the music made him so beautiful, she took the pan pipes, hoping to look as beautiful as him" wrote Longus, the 5th BC century Greek author of this bucolic story, which epitomizes the purity of love. Daphnis and Chloé's story of love, innocence and discovery resurfaced in 1821 through a French translation of the original Greek text by Longus. It provided a great source of inspiration for painters such as Gaston Renault, who has depicted this romantic theme with charm and tenderness.
