Artwork Title: View of San Vito with Monte Guadagnolo in the Distance

View of San Vito with Monte Guadagnolo in the Distance, 1822

Heinrich Reinhold

This painting is a precise replica of a plein-air sketch that Reinhold made in September 1822. It is fascinating that in making this second version he even reproduced the areas consisting of nothing but the original support that had been left in reserve and unpainted. Reinhold often painted such replicas for admirers: he gave this example to his friend and sketching companion Johann Joachim Faber, whose work hangs nearby and shares the same aesthetic. The German architect and painter Karl Friedrich Schinkel, for whom Reinhold produced works similar to this one, praised his sketches for "truly embodying the genuineness of art in their own right."
