Ilir Zefi

Zefi’s painting is spontaneous, surprising, evocative and deconstructive. There is an organized chaos that produces art with a strong connection to color. The surreal state in ‘The Beat of Painting’ is explored by harmony in chaos, magnifying the explosive experience. Zefi creates his paintings with an audience watching him respond to live music. Sometimes he will play with the band whilst creating acrylic paintings on canvas.

Renowned art critic Marco Tonell describes Ilir Zefi’s work “For lovers of historical references, Zefi’s work seem to possess the same charge, the same carnality of gesture and color of the Americans Hartigan, Frankenthaler and Hofmann, figures of the refined and lyrical wing of Abstract Expressionism.”

Born in Mirdite, Albania in 1963, Ilir studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Tirana. He moved to Rome in 1992, where he lived for fifteen years. In 2005 he moved to Brooklyn, and now resides in Buffalo, New York. Ilir’s work has been exhibited in private and public art galleries in Milan, Rome, Tucson, Amsterdam, and Toronto. In the past three years, Ilir’s work has appeared at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo.
