Artwork Title: Cover of Kattresan

Cover of Kattresan, 1909

Ivar Arosenius

Kattresan can be translated (roughly) as Cat's Journey or Cat Ride. Ivar Arosenius is one of those artists of whom it can be said that his fame came too late. He never saw his own great breakthrough. When the children's book Kattresan was published in 1909 he was already gone. Arosenius's style is treacherously simple, and this simplicity is certainly a strong contributing factor to his ongoing popularity. But behind that apparent simplicity hides an advanced reuse of ancient artistic expressions. With influences from, among other things, Italian Renaissance painting and medieval craftsmanship, Arosenius creates an entire image world in which the child, but sometimes the artist himself, seems to explore the world.
