Artwork Title: The Girl in the Cottage

The Girl in the Cottage

James Dickson Innes

The figure in the painting Girl in a Cottage is probably Euphemia Lamb (1886-1957). Innes arrived at Arenig in late 1910 on the rebound from a love affair with Euphemia Lamb, an artists model and part of the mileau around Augustus John. In 1911 at the cottage (Nant Ddu) located just below Arenig Innes was joined by Augustus John, Derwent Lees and Ian Strang at various times along with an assortment of woman, one of whom was Euphemia Lamb. The painting Girl in a Cottage most likely depicts the interior of the cottage at Arenig. The size of panel Innes has used fits with others he used on location outside at Arenig, such as in Arenig.
