Canal, Venice, Italy

Jane Peterson

Jane Peterson loved Venice. It was one of her favorite places to paint. In this view of a narrow canal. she played masterfully with the contrast of warm light and cool shadow. Peterson enlivened the scene with figures gathered along the walkway and with bold brushwork in the reflections in the water. Peterson expert Jonathan Joseph described the painting as a fine example of her early work, probably executed prior to Peterson's study with Joaquín Sorolla in 1909. Peterson first visited Venice in 1907. Applying complementary warm and cool tones with dynamic impasto, the artist captures the Rio de San Barnaba waterway looking east to towards the Grand Canal with the campanile...
