Artwork Title: Larkspur
Peterson captures the regal blue-purple blossoms standing at full attention under warm summer sunlight with her distinctive brushwork and confident color. The painting was shown at the Grand Central Art Galleries in New York, possibly in either her 1938 or 1944 solo exhibition, and may also have been featured at Ehrich Galleries in New York as it seems to be the same scene described by a critic: “Her largest and finest composition is of a larkspur border in some sunny garden rendered with great felicity of touch and harmony of color.” In 1922, Peterson described her love of rendering flowers and gardens wherever her travels took her: “...When a friend who knows me well wishes to give me a real thrill, he has only to whisper, ‘I know of a new garden where you may paint.’ I adore gardens! They are the most elusive art of a nation.” (http://www.vosegalleries.com/artists/jane-peterson/works/larkspur#.WSLClYU41WY)
