Kūkai (空海 literally: "ocean of emptiness"), also known posthumously as Kōbō-Daishi (弘法大師 literally: the Grand Master [Daishi 大師] Who Propagated Buddhist Dharma [Kōbō 弘法), was a Japanese monk, civil servant, scholar, poet, and artist, founder of the Shingon or "True Word" school of Buddhism. To the present day, Kūkai is renowned in Japan as brilliant and innovative calligrapher, linguist as well as an engineer.
