Artwork Title: The Scallop

The Scallop, 2003

Maggi Hambling

Hambling's Scallop (2003) stands on the north end of Aldeburgh beach. It is a tribute to Benjamin Britten and is pierced with the words "I hear those voices that will not be drowned" from his opera Peter Grimes. ...With regard to Scallop the artist describes the sculpture as a conversation with the sea: "An important part of my concept is that at the center of the sculpture, where the sound of the waves and the winds are focused, a visitor may sit and contemplate the mysterious power of the sea."
