Makoto Fujimura

I grew up bi-culturally, between Japan and the U.S., so I am influenced by both cultures, and also, in a sense, part of both and exiled from both. This allows me to have objectivity toward both cultures, but at the same time love toward the ideals of both cultures. I am indebted to Japanese aesthetic and to American abstract expressionism. I hope my works capture the grandeur and vista of American landscape painters such as the Hudson River School, but also the mystery of Tohaku Hasegawa, a Japanese 16th century master.
