A [Zen-] monk asked Joshu (趙州): “Why did Bodhidharma come from the West?" [here meaning he was from India going to East-Asia & China to teach Zen-Buddhism]. Jōshū answered :“The cypress tree in the front garden". In original Japanese: "Teizen (=front garden) Hakujushi (=cypress)".
