“My Aim as artist is to use the eyes of my heart to penetrate this concrete world and to fill the viewer with awe by rendering the sublime”. - Nicora Gangi 2011

"My aim as an artist is to be the observer penetrating with eyes and heart this material world to realize and visualize at its core its ultimate corporeality, through Realism. "

Painting Method:

My training as an artist has been as a printmaker. I learned how to print an image that was drawn onto a litho stone, after I had gained the understanding of how to print images in black and white I was then trained in the manner of mixing and using colored inks. Eventually, I was trained how to create more colors using a layering technique. As a result of this training, I use this layering technique in my pastels, watercolors and now my oil paintings.
When I begin an oil painting, I prime a cotton canvas, or an archival cotton paper or a wood panel with gesso. As I apply the gesso, I work to create a very flat smooth surface on which to begin my painting. On top of the white ground, I would outline, in very thin paint, where the first under panting was to be placed. The under painting is done in one color which becomes the base tone for the whole painting. For example, if the painting is to be predominately blue, then blue is used as the under painting.

Applying more layers of under painting creates the darker values of the composition. After the surface is thoroughly dry I then lightly sand it, I apply pure color next. Again there is allowance for the drying, after which more thin applications of color pigment and pale oil is painted over the previous layer. This method continues as many times as needed to complete the painting. A final layer of a matt varnish is applied and allowed to dry thoroughly.
