Hans van Zijl, the Artist's Wife, Resting, oil on canvas, 1932

Otto B. De Kat

Otto de Kat is sometimes called an 'intimist', a painter who preferred his motifs from his own environment: his wife, his interior, the landscape and his house-studio in the Auvergne. His great example was Pierre Bonnard. De Kat started his painting career when he left for Paris in 1928, where he was influenced by Impressionism. Back in the Netherlands, he mainly painted portraits and interiors. In these he captured his first impression of atmosphere, light and color, after they had settled and only the essence was left. After settling in Ukkel (1938) this 'settled Impressionism' ripened into ever looser and more abstract forms in beautiful coloring. Museums: including Frans Halsmuseum in Haarlem.
