Artwork Title: Early Self Portrait

Early Self Portrait

Piet Van Boxel

Piet van Boxel painted this self portrait in his younger years. He did not like to show self-portraits, but he exhibited a large self-portrait in the Pulchri studio in 1986 and won the Jacob Hertog prize. Van Boxel completed his academy at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam. He mainly painted with oil paint and developed into an excellent portrait painter; his portraits radiated the character of the model. He also painted many still lifes. It was not until later in his career that he started watercolors, with which he had great success.
