A painter, draftsman, and illustrator, Rachel Berman (aka: Susan King) was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and raised in Victoria, Canada, which is where she died. She also lived and worked in New York, Toronto and Vancouver.

Her mediums were oils, watercolors, gouache, ink, graphite, oil pastels and mixed mediums. Her subjects were portraits, figures, nudes, interiors, street scenes, urban life, genre, allegory, humor, fantasy, cartoon characters and social commentary. Her styles were caricature, cartoon, fauvism, Lettrism and Realism.

Her paintings have been likened to the poems of Leonard Cohen, the plays of Harold Pinter, and "a season's worth of Masterpiece Theatre episodes." The mysterious figures and hidden stories glimpsed in her paintings are a reflection of the mysteries Berman has unravelled in her own life. Once known as Susan King, she discovered her original birth name, birth date, and the names of her biological parents several years ago. This experience led her to reclaim her long-lost name.

A self-taught painter who worked as a professional artist for more than 30 years. In 2001, she illustrated her first picture book, Pigmalion, written by Glenda Leznoff (Tradewind Books). That venture was followed by two collaborations with author Tim Beiser, Bradley McGogg, the Very Fine Frog in 2009 and Miss Mousie’s Blind Date in 2012. Both books were finalists for the Governor General’s Literary Award for children’s illustration.
