JF: I think the background plaids in your paintings exaggerate the ground. It’s this variation on emblematic abstraction where the figure is soaked in the ground of the canvas. You illustrate that by suspending images on the plaid, which imitates the weave in this far-out Greenbergian attenuation or cartoon rarefaction. SM Well, I guess that’s true in a way.
