Artwork Title: Least Concern

Least Concern, 2018

Teagan White

This piece was created for Thinkspace's fifth "POW! WOW! Hawaii: Exploring the New Contemporary Art Movement" group exhibition in tandem with the POW! WOW! Hawaii Mural Festival. The show features over 50 artists and is showing at the Honolulu Museum of Art School. "Least Concern" focuses on species that most of us appreciate for being beautiful or cute, but that don't merit special conservation considerations because their populations are stable, or even high enough to be a nuisance. Most animals fit into this level of prioritization, living and dying in makeshift habitats on whatever land we have least use for, amid our pollution and highways and homes and collapsing ecosystems and discarded things, their situation never quite dire enough for us to feel it's worth the trouble of fixing.
