Head of a Peasant Woman, Profile to the Right, 1884-1885

Vincent van Gogh

Nuenen, December 1884-May 1885 [2015] At an auction in Germany, a small painting by Vincent van Gogh was auctioned for an amount of 600,000 euros. It concerns the work 'Head of a peasant woman, profile to the right'. Van Gogh made this painting when he worked in Brabant in 1884 and 1885. According to experts, many of the farm works that he made at the time must be regarded as preliminary studies for his masterpiece The Potato Eaters. The Villa Grisebach auction house in Düsseldorf had also estimated the value of the painting - with a size of 41 by 30.5 centimeters - at around 600,000 euros. The painting had been in the hands of a private collector since the 1980s. Who the new owner is, is not disclosed.
