In 1878, John Singer Sargent traveled to Capri in company with his friend and fellow painter Charles-Edmond Daux. They were introduced to Rosina Ferrara, a 14-year-old local girl who quickly enthralled them and became their model of choice. Sargent painted her many times that summer, and one of his sketches – Head of an Ana-Capri Girl– is very similar to Daux’s, in full profile against a simple background, and the same height. It is likely that the two paintings were done at the same sitting. Daux’s was exhibited the following year at the Paris Salon, under the name Rosina (no. 843).
