Around 1865 Between 1859 and 1868, Jean-Baptiste Côté was engraver-caricaturist for the satirical press of Quebec. The practice of caricature will have a clear impact on his profane figures in sculpture, such as his exaggerated representations of bourgeois occupying their leisure time. The caption accompanying one of his similarly designed caricatures, "A Singer of the Salon" (La Scie Illustrée, February 23, 1866), confirms the satire directed towards this group. Works of this kind, however, represent a singularity in the history of Canadian sculpture.
