Artwork Title: The Outside Viewing Tank: Directorate of Camouflage, Naval Section

The Outside Viewing Tank: Directorate of Camouflage, Naval Section, 1943

John Erskine James Yunge-Bateman

A young bespectacled woman leans into the composition from the left with her hands submerged in a water tank. The viewing-tank appears to be on the roof of a building as there is a blue sky with clouds and the green dome of a building in the background. A camouflaged model of an aircraft carrier floats on the water and a pair of binoculars sit on the edge of the tank, in the right foreground. (http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/38913) Hard to believe that the same man who did the black and white illustrations for King Lear did this painting, but apparently it is true. Very difficult to find much information at all online about Yunge-Bateman.
