I began inventing this system in the summer of 1970, not because I felt organized, but because i was angry. I was sharing a beach house with people who irritated me -- and worse, I didn't even have a place to paint. So I sat around and drew. I would strike out on graph paper with jabbing marks, Then I thought how interesting this intensity would be in color. As i began to put color down, I wanted a system to create patterns. So I changed the color of every other line and column, every third line, and so forth. I kept poking and pushing, trying long lines, short lines, going in every direction, to arrive at a great variety of systems. The line patterns freed me to work with color. And the colors gave me a new way to define patterns. [http://www.gloriaklein.website/large-paintings.html]
