Louise Moillon is regarded by some critics as perhaps the finest French still life painter of the 17th century. In 1973, one of Moillon's paintings was sold at an auction at Sotheby's for a $120,000.... Still life paintings in Moillon's time was not well-regarded but it was a genre with which Moillon excelled and specialized in still lifes with fruits, vegetables, and occasional figures arranged in a sober, stark, and rather archaic manner, Louise Moillon fell into obscurity toward the end of the 17th century when her manner of painting went out of fashion. Currently the focus of a revivalist effort, Moillon has recently been called the greatest still-life painter in 17th-century France. Though scholars may debate this assessment, Louise Moillon at her best produced images memorable for their observed detail and striking for their austerity.
