Artwork Title: Fragmented

Fragmented, 2017

Neo Diseko

From the artists statement: ‘Fragmented’ is a body of work that utilises and interferes with family archival material and history. I use the narrative of history as archives to reference to the discourse surrounding social constructs and in so doing employ my grandmother’s use of Victorian décor in her house in Soweto. One can argue that Victorian décor in a township like Soweto is evidence of a certain social construct and by employing this motif in this work I challenge the construction of historically placed ideologies by introducing a new interpretation for these materials. This work consists of two figures presented alongside each other in two panels. The figures are depicted on Victorian winter sheeting as reference to the notion of Victorian décor. I fragment the faces of the figures to deprive them of character in order to allow the substrate upon which I work to be the character. I furthermore manipulate the nature of the material to introduce a new narrative and challenge these notions while allowing for certain areas to remain what they are.
