Artwork Title: Saint Septima with Carolina Jasmine

Saint Septima with Carolina Jasmine

Natalie Daise

Sweetgrass Saints are Gullah ancestors who lived and worked in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Septima Clark was an educator and civil rights worker from Charleston, SC. Her advocacy for equal education was legendary. In 1989 Brian Lanker's epic black and white photo of Septima Clark was the cover of the "I Dream A World." It was that photo that was the basis for this painting. The original work is acrylic and gold leaf on 12" x 12" board, framed in wide wood.
